Mexico Seizes Largest Meth Lab in Recent Raid Under Current Administration, Reports Reuters
MEXICO CITY – Mexican armed forces announced on Monday that they have dismantled a significant clandestine methamphetamine "mega-laboratory" in the northern Sonora state. This operation represents the largest drug lab seized during the current administration.
According to a statement from Mexico’s navy, this laboratory accounts for more than 50% of the drugs and precursor chemicals confiscated this year. Photos released alongside the announcement showcased large containers and white sacks found at the rural camp near Rancho Viejo.
The navy reported the seizure of 4.13 metric tons (91,073 lbs) of meth and 1.27 tons of precursor chemicals essential for synthesizing the drug. The facility contained 72 laboratory reactors, significantly more than the previous record of 13, which had been viewed as the largest known clandestine lab, also located in Sonora.
The United States has been urging Mexico to intensify its efforts against drug trafficking, particularly concerning fentanyl. Recent internal documents showed that the Mexican military has updated its figures regarding the number of drug lab raids conducted since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office, now in his final year.
In response, Mexico has called on the United States to enforce stricter measures against the illegal flow of firearms into the country, which are often funneled to drug cartels operating across the border.
