Brazilian President Bolsonaro Has Pneumonia but Reports He Is Well, Says Reuters
SAO PAULO – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently experiencing pneumonia after developing a fever during his hospital stay. Despite this, a message on his Twitter account reassured the public that he was "well."
Bolsonaro underwent surgery on January 28 to remove a colostomy bag that had been placed following a stabbing incident while he was campaigning for last year’s elections.
Initially, he was expected to remain in the hospital for 10 days. However, his spokesperson announced this week that he would stay hospitalized at least until February 11 due to persistence of fever and other complications.
In a recent tweet, Bolsonaro’s account cautioned against sensationalism, stating: "Be careful not to be sensationalist. We are very relaxed, well and remain steady."
The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo released a statement indicating that medical staff had adjusted his antibiotic treatment following a fever that occurred late on Wednesday.
Presidential spokesperson Otavio Rego Barros informed reporters that the president is currently in semi-intensive care and reported a fever of 38 degrees Celsius (100.4°F) alongside bacterial pneumonia.
In the event that Bolsonaro is unable to fulfill his presidential responsibilities, Vice President Hamilton Mourao, a retired general who has had ideological disagreements with Bolsonaro, would assume control.
