Russia Claims Confrontation with the West is Unprecedented in History, According to Reuters
Moscow – A senior Russian diplomat warned on Thursday that the ongoing conflict between Russia and the West regarding Ukraine is unprecedented in history, and any missteps could have catastrophic consequences. This statement was made in response to comparisons being drawn between the current situation and the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
The war in Ukraine, now in its third year, represents the largest land conflict in Europe since World War Two, escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations. Russian officials believe that the situation is now entering its most perilous phase.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted that while there have been discussions referencing the Cuban Missile Crisis—when the risk of nuclear war was exceptionally high due to the placement of Soviet missiles in Cuba—the current events are uniquely complex. He emphasized, "What is happening has no analogues in the past."
Ryabkov, responsible for arms control and relations with North America, highlighted the significant risk of a military confrontation between nuclear powers and cautioned against underestimating this threat. "We are navigating through uncharted military and political territory," he remarked.
The Deputy Minister expressed concern that a miscalculation at this critical juncture could lead to disaster, expressing doubts about whether Western leaders can accurately gauge the repercussions of their actions.
For weeks, Russia has cautioned the United States and its allies that allowing Ukraine to launch deep strikes into Russian territory with Western-supplied missiles would be viewed as a major escalation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been urging his allies to enable Ukraine to use long-range missiles, including U.S. ATACMS, to curb Russia’s ability to strike.
President Vladimir Putin stated that giving Western approval for such actions would equate to "the direct involvement of NATO countries, the United States, and Europe in the war in Ukraine." Furthermore, he noted that Russia had adjusted its nuclear doctrine to lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons in light of the current circumstances.
Zelenskiy has called on the West to disregard Russia’s so-called "red lines," a sentiment echoed by some Western allies encouraging a more assertive stance against Moscow. However, Russia, as the world’s largest nuclear power, views this approach as dangerously misguided.
