China Seeks WTO Consultations with Canada Regarding Tariffs, Reports Reuters

China announced on Friday that it has requested discussions with Canada at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding tariffs imposed by Ottawa on its electric vehicles, as well as on steel and aluminum products. This development comes shortly after Beijing unveiled plans to investigate Canadian canola imports.

Earlier this week, China revealed its intention to initiate an anti-dumping investigation concerning canola imports from Canada. This follows Canada’s recent decision to implement a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminum, actions taken in coordination with the United States and the European Union.

According to a statement from China’s commerce ministry, “On September 6, China lodged a request for consultations with Canada at the WTO regarding Canada’s additional tariffs on electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.”

The statement also criticized Canada, claiming, “Canada has disregarded WTO rules and violated its commitments within the WTO by proposing to impose additional tariffs of 100% and 25%.” It urged Canada to adhere to WTO regulations and rectify its actions without delay.
