Argentina’s Milei Criticizes ‘Leviathan’ UN and Pledges ‘Agenda of Freedom’
By Nicolás Misculin
At the United Nations General Assembly, Argentina’s bold libertarian President Javier Milei delivered a critical speech, labeling the UN as a "Leviathan" and dismissing its ‘Pact for the Future’. He advocated instead for an "agenda of freedom."
In his impassioned address, Milei asserted that the UN had become ineffective in its primary role of conflict prevention. He denounced the recently adopted future pact as "socialist" and argued that the UN’s mission had become "distorted."
"It has become a multi-tentacled Leviathan that seeks to dictate the actions of nation states and the lives of citizens globally," said Milei, drawing a parallel to the mythological sea serpent.
Milei also criticized leftist ideas, stating, "They create frameworks based on how they believe people should behave, and when reality diverges from this model, they repress, restrict, and infringe upon freedom."
The president is under pressure to restore economic stability in Argentina following years of turmoil. His administration has implemented strict austerity measures aimed at addressing a significant fiscal deficit, although these steps are exacerbating the ongoing recession.
Before venturing into politics, Milei, a former TV commentator known for his provocative style, made headlines by criticizing Pope Francis, labeling him as "preaching communism." Since taking office in December, however, both have sought to improve their relationship.
