Mother of Georgia Mass Shooting Suspect Contacted School Prior to Attack, Reports Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The mother of the teenager charged with fatally shooting two students and two teachers at a Georgia high school on Wednesday alerted a school counselor about an "extreme emergency" earlier that day, as reported by the Washington Post.

Marcee Gray, mother of 14-year-old Colt Gray, stated that she urged the counselor to locate her son immediately. Phone records shared by a relative show she made a 10-minute call to Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, at 9:50 a.m., roughly 30 minutes before the shooting began.

Although Gray did not disclose the reasons for her call, she mentioned that she had communicated this information to law enforcement. She expressed deep remorse for the "pain and suffering" the victims and their families are enduring.

According to another student, a school administrator attempted to find Colt in his math class that morning, but he was not present.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the inquiry, directed questions to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, responsible for prosecuting the case. The office did not respond to a request for comment on Sunday.

Colt Gray faces four counts of murder and is being charged as an adult. His father, Colin Gray, is also facing charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children, as part of a legal strategy aimed at holding parents accountable for enabling minors’ access to firearms used in violent incidents.

Prosecutors allege that Colin Gray supplied the weapon involved in the shooting.

In May 2023, authorities from a nearby county had interviewed both Colin and Colt Gray regarding online threats to execute a school shooting. At that time, Colt denied making any threats, and his father asserted that his son did not have unrestricted access to his hunting rifles.

The case was ultimately closed after investigators determined there was no evidence linking the Grays to the threats.
