Kremlin Calls for De-escalation Amid Concerns Over Potential US Strikes on Iran, According to Reuters
MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin commented on Tuesday regarding the possibility of U.S. strikes on Iranian interests, highlighting the heightened tensions in the Middle East and emphasizing the need for de-escalation rather than further destabilization of the region.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated on Monday that the U.S. would take “all necessary actions” to protect its troops following a deadly drone attack in Jordan attributed to Iran-backed militants. However, the Biden administration is keen to convey that it is not pursuing war with Iran.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that any actions leading to increased instability in the region are unwelcome, especially given the current potential for conflict. “We will not welcome the continuation of such actions, regardless of their source. The level of tension is high now, and we need to take steps to de-escalate. This approach is crucial to preventing the conflict from widening,” he told journalists.
Amid these developments, Russia is strengthening its relationship with Iran as its own ties with the United States have reached a low point not seen since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, largely due to what Moscow refers to as its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
