Sen. Warren and Over 100 Legislators Urge White House and Treasury on Crypto and Terrorism
Senator Elizabeth Warren spearheaded a letter that garnered the support of 28 other senators and 76 members of the House of Representatives, addressing concerns regarding the use of cryptocurrency in financing terrorism. The signatories included individuals from both political parties as well as one independent, though the majority were Democrats.
Dated October 17, the letter was directed to Brian Nelson, the Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. The authors referenced a news report indicating that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad had amassed over $130 million in cryptocurrency donations from August 2021 to June 2023, with very little of the funds recovered. The letter expressed serious concerns regarding these developments.
