U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voiced her call for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign on Wednesday, stating it would be "for the good of the city." This announcement comes in light of several senior city officials being involved in ongoing federal corruption investigations.
In a message on social media, Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of New York City, expressed her concerns: "I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City." She noted that the increasing number of resignations and vacancies within the administration poses significant risks to governmental functions. She further emphasized that the ongoing investigations could hinder the city’s ability to attract and maintain a competent administration.
The most recent resignation was that of David Banks, the chancellor of New York City’s public school system, who announced his departure on Wednesday. Reports indicate that federal agents had previously seized his phone as part of a bribery investigation.
Additionally, Edward Caban resigned from his role as police commissioner just a week after federal investigators also seized his phone.
The federal scrutiny has not stopped there; agents have reportedly searched the homes and seized phones belonging to several other high-ranking officials and advisers within Adams’ administration.
In November, the FBI took electronic devices from Mayor Adams himself. Since becoming mayor in 2022, Adams, a former police captain, has asserted his cooperation with ongoing investigations and reiterated that his administration’s focus remains on serving the citizens of New York.
As of now, no officials have been charged with any wrongdoing.
