U.S. Approves Multi-Day Strikes in Iraq and Syria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States has authorized plans for multi-day strikes in Iraq and Syria targeting various objectives, including personnel and facilities linked to Iran, as reported by CBS News on Thursday, citing U.S. officials.

President Joe Biden stated on Tuesday that he had decided on a response to a recent drone attack in northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border, which resulted in the deaths of three U.S. service members and injured over 40. The U.S. has attributed this drone attack to militants backed by Iran.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken indicated on Monday that the U.S. response could be multi-faceted, unfolding in stages and sustained over time.

CBS News did not detail what the approval from the U.S. government means regarding the timing of the strikes.

This drone attack marked the first lethal incident involving U.S. forces since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October, signifying a further escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

U.S. officials are currently deliberating on how to impose consequences on Iran-supported militias without risking a broader conflict.
