UK PM’s Office Refutes Claims of June 6 Election Plan, Reuters Reports
LONDON – The office of British Prime Minister Theresa May has dismissed reports from a newspaper suggesting that her advisors were contemplating a national election on June 6.
A spokesperson from Downing Street stated, "It’s 100 percent untrue," referring to the article that claimed the election was being considered if Brexit were delayed past March 29, followed by May securing parliamentary approval for a withdrawal agreement in April.
The article also cited an unnamed minister who characterized the proposal as an attempt by "second-rate staff desperate to keep their jobs."
In 2017, May unexpectedly called for a snap election, which resulted in her Conservative Party losing its slim majority, forcing her to depend on support from the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland to remain in power.
