Alphabet to Invest $3.3 Billion in Two Data Centers in South Carolina, According to Reuters

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced plans to invest $3.3 billion in South Carolina to construct two new data centers. CEO Sundar Pichai revealed this initiative during a period when the company and its competitors are significantly enhancing their infrastructure to support the growth of artificial intelligence applications.

The new data center campuses will be situated in Dorchester County, with an expansion of the existing data center in Berkeley County also taking place, as reported by the South Carolina governor’s office. The facilities in Dorchester County, located in the Pine Hill Business Campus in Ridgeville and Winding Woods Commerce Park in St. George, will require an investment of $2 billion and are expected to create 200 operational jobs. The investment in Berkeley County will amount to $1.3 billion.

In July, Alphabet reported a capital expenditure of $13 billion for the second quarter and indicated to investors that quarterly spending for the remainder of 2024 would be at least $12 billion. In a related effort, Microsoft disclosed earlier this month a collaboration with BlackRock and an Abu Dhabi-backed investment firm to launch a fund exceeding $30 billion aimed at investing in AI infrastructure, including data centers and energy projects.
