EU Promises ‘Strong Response’ to Iran’s Missile Transfer to Russia, According to Reuters
BRUSSELS – The transfer of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia signifies a further military escalation and will prompt a “strong response” from the European Union, according to EU foreign affairs spokesperson Peter Stano on Tuesday.
Stano noted that the EU’s diplomatic service, at the request of foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, has already provided EU member states with “a substantial set of decisive and targeted measures” against Iran in response to the missile transfer.
He emphasized that any of these measures would require unanimous agreement from all 27 EU members to be implemented.
“We confirm that we have received credible information about the delivery of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia,” Stano stated.
He added that Borrell has consistently warned Iranian officials against such actions during his bilateral discussions.
Stano pointed out that the transfer violates the U.N. Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law.
He expressed concern that the delivery of ballistic missiles could aid Russia’s escalating bombing campaign against Ukrainian civilians, cities, and civilian infrastructure, likely leading to increased civilian casualties and destruction.
“Such support for Russia’s campaign of terror against the Ukrainian population will be met with a strong EU response,” Stano cautioned.
