India’s Demand for Coal Reaches Record High
A record-breaking heatwave has driven India’s demand for coal-based power to unprecedented levels, according to a statement from the country’s federal government.
Government data indicates that coal demand has increased by 7.3% this fiscal year, reaching record highs. In 2023, coal accounted for over 75% of India’s power generation, cementing its status as the most cost-effective energy source for a nation of 1.4 billion people.
The government noted that renewable energy currently contributes only about 2% of the country’s power supply. As extreme temperatures persist across India due to the ongoing heatwave, the need for electricity—and the coal that powers it—has intensified.
India’s Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the country is experiencing one of its longest heatwaves on record, significantly boosting the demand for electricity to operate air conditioners.
As of June 16, coal production in India reached 207.48 million tonnes, marking an increase of nearly 10% compared to the same timeframe last year. The government expressed its commitment to enhancing coal production and transportation to ensure power plants have sufficient reserves to meet the rising electricity demand.
