Taiwan Looks Forward to Strengthening Ties with Japan Under Ishiba, According to Reuters
Taipei – Taiwan President Lai Ching-te expressed eagerness to strengthen connections with Japan’s ruling party following Shigeru Ishiba’s recent election as its leader, according to a statement from Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Ishiba, a former defense minister, secured his position as Japan’s prime minister after a competitive race for leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), marking his fifth attempt at the role.
Lai congratulated Ishiba, who visited Taipei last month for discussions, acknowledging the importance of developing relations between the two parties. The DPP emphasized their shared commitment to enhancing exchanges and cooperation at all levels under Ishiba’s leadership.
In addition to his presidential role, Lai also serves as chairman of the DPP.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry announced separately that it instructed its representative office in Tokyo to convey congratulations to Ishiba on behalf of the Taiwanese government as soon as possible.
While Japan, like many nations, does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is recognized as one of the strongest advocates for Taiwan on the global stage, second only to the United States, which often provokes displeasure from Beijing.
