TEL AVIV – On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism regarding a potential agreement that would facilitate the release of Israelis abducted by Hamas in exchange for an extended ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, but we are very much focused on that, and we hope to resume the release of hostages that was previously interrupted,” Blinken stated to reporters at the start of his meeting in Jerusalem with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Prior to this, the U.S. diplomat met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss a counterproposal from Hamas regarding a ceasefire plan devised by U.S. and Israeli intelligence leaders. This plan was recently communicated to Hamas through mediators from Qatar and Egypt.

The meeting also included other high-ranking Israeli officials, such as Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Mossad Director David Barnea, as shown in footage released by Netanyahu’s office.

Blinken has been actively engaging in shuttle diplomacy, making his fifth trip to the region since the deadly Hamas attack on Israel on October 7. His visit included discussions with the leaders of Egypt and Qatar, both of whom are involved in the negotiations for the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Blinken and other senior U.S. officials regard the achievement of a deal that would release remaining hostages in exchange for a prolonged ceasefire as a crucial step toward fostering broader discussions on Israel’s integration into the region, including the normalization of relations with Saudi Arabia.

U.S. officials note that discussions regarding the future governance of Gaza post-conflict, potential reforms to the Palestinian Authority, and pathways towards establishing a Palestinian state are interconnected aspects of the situation.

Moreover, officials emphasize that enhancing humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza hinges on achieving peace in the area.

During his meeting with Herzog, Blinken indicated that he would share insights from his conversations with Saudi, Egyptian, and Qatari officials regarding Israel’s broader regional integration.

“I do believe that there’s a very positive, powerful future that is possible, one that genuinely integrates Israel into the region and addresses its profound security needs, allowing it to exist in peace and security while also addressing the aspirations of the Palestinian people,” Blinken remarked.

He further noted, “This equation is evident and was reinforced by my visits with our friends and partners in the region.”
