SYDNEY – Australian authorities recovered the bodies of two men from a storm water drain during cleanup operations following significant flooding in Queensland’s northeastern region, police reported on Tuesday.

Prolonged heavy rainfall in Townsville has led to insurance losses exceeding A$45 million, according to industry estimates, and meteorologists have cautioned that intense showers may persist in several areas.

The police statement confirmed that the bodies were discovered around midday and have been identified, although the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Emergency services evacuated over 1,100 residents on Monday after dam gates were opened to manage flooding from overflowing reservoirs. Reports also indicated that crocodiles were seen roaming in suburban streets.

"As the waters recede and we transition from the response phase to recovery, there will be significant challenges for the community," Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated to the media in Townsville. He noted the dual impact of physical damage and the psychological toll as residents return to assess the destruction of their homes.
