Merkel: There is Still Time for a Brexit Solution
TOKYO – German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated in Japan on Tuesday that there remains an opportunity to resolve the stalemate concerning Britain’s exit from the European Union.
British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal faced rejection from parliament last month, and she is currently attempting to persuade the EU to accept modifications to the agreement ahead of the March 29 departure deadline.
"From a political perspective, there is still time," Merkel commented during an economic conference in Tokyo.
She emphasized the importance of understanding the specific vision the UK has for its future relationship with the EU. Merkel noted that the tight timeline poses challenges for businesses reliant on "just-in-time" production systems, highlighting the unique complications surrounding the Irish border and the backstop agreement.
She expressed optimism, stating, "It should be humanly possible to find a solution to such a precise problem. But this depends on the kind of trade deal that we forge with each other."
