Meta Delays Joining EU’s AI Pact Ahead of New Law, Reports Reuters

Meta Platforms will not be joining the European Union’s AI Pact immediately, according to a company spokesperson on Tuesday.

The AI Pact serves as a temporary measure preceding the full implementation of the EU’s AI Act. This act, finalized in May, establishes groundbreaking regulations regarding the development and use of artificial intelligence.

Under the AI Act, companies are required to provide comprehensive summaries of the data utilized to train their AI models. The European Commission announced that most of the act’s regulations will take effect on August 2, 2026.

Until the law is fully enforced, companies are encouraged to enroll in the voluntary AI Pact to start adhering to some of the regulations.

A Meta spokesperson stated, “We welcome harmonized EU rules and are focusing on our compliance work under the AI Act at this time,” noting that the company may opt to join the AI Pact in the future.

The AI Act represents the fifth pillar of EU legislation and will work alongside other regulations such as the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Data Governance Act, and Data Act.
