Israel Used US-Made Bomb in Strike on Hezbollah Leader, Says US Senator
A U.S. senator revealed on Sunday that the bomb used by Israel to eliminate Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut was an American-made guided weapon.
Mark Kelly, chair of the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee, stated during an NBC interview that Israel employed a 2,000-pound Mark 84 series bomb in the operation. This disclosure marks the first indication from a U.S. official regarding the type of weapon utilized in the strike.
“We see more use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons,” Kelly noted, referring to Joint Direct Attack Munitions. “That 2,000-pound bomb that was used, that’s a Mark 84 series bomb, to take out Nasrallah,” he added.
The Israeli military confirmed on Saturday that it had eliminated Nasrallah at the group’s central command headquarters in Beirut’s southern suburbs. However, they have refrained from providing details about the weapons used in the attack. The Pentagon was not immediately available for comment.
JDAMs are designed to convert standard unguided bombs into guided weapons through the addition of fins and a GPS guidance system. The U.S. has long been Israel’s principal ally and its largest arms supplier.
