Metalworkers Halt Strike at Embraer Plant in Brazil, Reports Reuters

Metalworkers at Embraer Suspend Strike Amid Wage Negotiations

SAO PAULO – Metalworkers at Embraer’s plant in Sao Jose dos Campos have suspended their strike, which began on Tuesday as part of their campaign for increased wages. The local union, Sindmetal, announced that the strike was called off after approximately three hours due to workers feeling "intimidated by the large presence of police officers and security personnel."

The union plans to organize a new strike with workers from another shift later in the afternoon. Earlier on Tuesday, metalworkers had voted to strike after rejecting a wage proposal from the company.

While the union indicated that the strike could disrupt production at the factory, Embraer stated separately that operations were "normal" as discussions with the industry group continued.

Sindmetal reported that metalworkers were offered a 4.06% pay raise, aligned with Brazil’s inflation rate, though the union did not disclose the increase they were seeking. They had notified Embraer of the possibility of a strike on September 26, but the wage proposal remained unchanged.

Embraer, recognized as the world’s third-largest aircraft manufacturer, stated that the 4.06% raise is available for workers earning up to 10,000 reais per month, along with a fixed raise for those earning more.

The company emphasized that this offer is consistent with proposals made by the industry association, and negotiations between the union and FIESP are ongoing. Additionally, Embraer confirmed that its other facilities were also operating without issues.
