Russia Claims Israel’s Gaza Bombardment Violates International Law, Reports Reuters

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed serious concerns regarding Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, stating that it contradicts international law and could lead to a disaster that may endure for decades. His comments represent some of the most pointed criticism from Moscow toward Israel, made during an interview with the Belarusian state news agency, which was released on Saturday.

Lavrov emphasized that, while terrorism is condemned, the response should not involve violating international humanitarian law. He criticized the indiscriminate use of force against areas populated by civilians, including hostages. He argued that Israel’s goal of completely eliminating Hamas would inevitably result in widespread destruction within Gaza and a significant loss of civilian life.

He warned, “If Gaza is destroyed and 2 million inhabitants are expelled, as some politicians in Israel and abroad propose, this will create a catastrophe for many decades, if not centuries.” He called for a cessation of hostilities and the implementation of humanitarian programs to aid those under blockade.

In the latest reports from health authorities in Gaza, it has been stated that over 7,000 Palestinians have died since the onset of the Israeli bombardment. This escalation followed a raid by Hamas militants on October 7, which Israel claims resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,400 Israelis, primarily civilians, along with the abduction of more than 200 hostages.

Russia has been advocating for an immediate ceasefire and a two-state solution, a stance that has strained its relations with Israel, particularly after extending an invitation to a Hamas delegation to visit Moscow. This decision was defended by Lavrov, who indicated that Hamas was seeking assistance for eight hostages located in Gaza.

He also noted that Russia maintains communication with Israel, stating, “We remain in full contact with Israel, and our ambassador is regularly in touch with them.” Lavrov mentioned that Russia is conveying the need for a peaceful resolution and urged against pursuing a “scorched earth” strategy.

Amid these tensions, Kyiv and Western nations have criticized Russia for its military actions in Ukraine, accusing it of targeting civilians. Moscow, however, insists that its military operations are focused solely on military objectives.
