Russia Shells Kherson, Ukraine, Injuring 8 and Damaging Buildings
Russian forces heavily shelled the center of the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on Friday, injuring eight people and causing damage to at least 15 buildings, according to a senior city official.
Images shared on social media depicted multiple locations covered in debris, with one building’s interior cluttered with shattered materials.
Roman Mrochko, the head of the city’s military administration, reported via a messaging app that three of the injured individuals were receiving hospital treatment. He noted that two buildings were completely destroyed, three sustained severe damage, and ten suffered minor damage.
“In the evening, the entire city trembled,” stated Ukraine’s Emergency Services. “The enemy targeted the very center of Kherson.”
The agency reported that emergency workers successfully rescued two women, aged 70 and 80, who had been trapped in a building, and they managed to bring a fire under control in an area strewn with rubble.
Additionally, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne indicated that Russian forces had shelled Beryslav, a town further north along the Dnipro River in the Kherson Region, resulting in one injury.
Russian troops captured Kherson early in the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine but later abandoned the city and the western bank of the Dnipro River late last year. They now routinely shell these areas from positions on the eastern bank.
