Biden Approves $567 Million in Defense Support for Taiwan, According to White House

U.S. President Joe Biden authorized $567 million in defense support for Taiwan on Sunday, as announced by the White House. This decision follows a pattern of the United States strengthening the island’s military capabilities amidst increasing tensions with China.

Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties, the United States remains Taiwan’s primary international supporter and arms supplier. China has persistently pressured Washington to cease arms sales to Taipei, which it claims as its territory.

In a statement, the White House indicated that Biden has empowered the Secretary of State to manage the drawdown of up to $567 million in defense articles and services from the Department of Defense, alongside military education and training to assist Taiwan. Further details were not disclosed.

Earlier in April, Biden enacted a hard-fought legislation that allocates billions in new U.S. aid for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, as well as for Israel and Taiwan.

Taipei has expressed frustration regarding delays in U.S. arms shipments, which include upgraded F-14 fighter jets. Meanwhile, China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory, has intensified military and political pressure over the last five years to solidify its claims, which Taipei firmly contests.
