‘Titanic’ Director James Cameron Joins Stability AI Board, Reports Reuters

Stability AI announced on Tuesday that filmmaker James Cameron, known for “Titanic” and “The Terminator,” has joined its board of directors.

The rapid advancement of generative AI is garnering significant interest from Hollywood, particularly amid rising production costs. Following the launch of OpenAI’s Sora, a text-to-video tool that gained attention for its impressive video quality, discussions between Hollywood executives and the company have intensified regarding potential applications for this technology.

Cameron’s involvement is seen as a step toward Stability AI’s aim to revolutionize visual media, providing creators with a comprehensive range of AI tools, according to CEO Prem Akkaraju. Based in London, Stability AI has secured approximately $80 million in funding this year and offers an AI image-generation tool that competes with those developed by major tech companies.

In 2022, the company raised $101 million in a seed round led by Coatue Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners, achieving a $1 billion valuation. Stability AI also offers Stable Video Diffusion, a tool for generating video content from text.

Cameron expressed that the convergence of generative AI and computer-generated imagery holds the potential to create innovative storytelling methods that were previously unimaginable.

Despite the excitement surrounding AI, Hollywood’s relationship with the technology has faced challenges. A key factor in the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023 was the demand for protections against the unregulated use of AI, seeking restrictions on how studios utilize this technology in film and television production.

Cameron joins other recent additions to Stability AI’s board, including Sean Parker, the former president of Facebook, who serves as the company’s executive chairman.
