Anti-terror Tech Group Concerned Musk’s X Membership Undermines Its Credibility, Reports The Sunday Times by Reuters

A counter-terrorism organization in the tech industry has expressed concerns regarding content shared by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on the social media platform known as X, formerly Twitter. This apprehension is heightened by X’s membership on the organization’s board, according to a report by The Sunday Times.

Members of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) feel that X’s involvement compromises the credibility of their efforts. The GIFCT, which also includes major companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and YouTube, is focused on combating online extremist content.

Neither X Corp nor the GIFCT provided immediate comments on the issue. Reports indicate that X has become a prominent platform for locating Hamas propaganda, with the Community Security Trust (CST)—a charity focused on combating extremism—asserting that its researchers could find videos from Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad within just ten minutes of searches on X.

The Sunday Times highlighted concerns raised in the GIFCT’s 2023 annual report, where the advisory committee noted issues related to online trust and safety, particularly aimed at X. The group indicated a growing worry over significant declines in the effectiveness of online safety measures on certain platforms and a diminishing emphasis on the detection of extremist content.

The report also mentioned that Elon Musk has reinstated banned extremists on X, introduced a paid verification system, and significantly reduced the content moderation team as part of his vision to reshape X into a platform advocating for unrestricted speech.

The GIFCT was established in 2017 in response to pressures from U.S. and European governments. However, X, as a founding member of the organization, has allegedly failed to fulfill its financial commitments to support anti-extremism efforts.
