Sudan’s Bashir Announces Reopening of Border with Eritrea After Yearlong Closure, Reports Reuters
KHARTOUM – Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir announced on Thursday the reopening of the border with Eritrea, which has been closed since January 6, 2018.
Speaking in Kassala, the capital of the eponymous state, al-Bashir declared, "I announce here, from Kassala, that we are opening the border with Eritrea because they are our brothers and our people. Politics will not divide us." His remarks were delivered during a televised address to a crowd of supporters.
The reopening signifies a step towards strengthening ties between the two neighboring nations.
