Bangladesh Garment Sector Minimum Wage Increased to Tk 12,500

The garment industry in Bangladesh is experiencing a notable update regarding its wage structure. A proposal for a new minimum wage of Tk 12,500 (with 63% designated as basic pay) was presented by factory owners to the government-set wage board. This comes in the wake of two weeks of worker protests demanding a wage of Tk 23,000. The proposal was confirmed by Siddiqur Rahman, a former vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), alongside representatives from the worker community during a delayed Wage Board meeting that lasted from 12:10 pm to 1:30 pm.

In a subsequent press conference in Dhaka, Monnujan Sufian announced the new minimum wage proposal. This development follows recent disruptions in factory operations due to the protests, although factories are now reopening. Despite the increased wage offer, workers continue to advocate for the higher amount of Tk 23,000.

Initially, Siddiqur Rahman suggested a lower wage of Tk 10,400 at a previous meeting held in Segunbagicha. The final decision regarding the wage adjustment will be made by the labor ministry during a scheduled meeting at 2:30 pm today. The decision is highly anticipated by all stakeholders in the Bangladesh garment sector.
