WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden has officially recognized the United Arab Emirates as a key defense partner of the United States following discussions with its president that covered topics such as the ongoing war in Gaza and increasing instability in the Middle East.

This U.S. designation – previously only given to India – facilitates closer military collaboration, including joint training and exercises.

After their meeting, Biden and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a statement advocating for "urgent, unhindered" humanitarian assistance to Gaza and affirmed their commitment to pursuing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

At the outset of the discussions, Biden shared that he had received updates on the situation involving Israel and Lebanon, where airstrikes on Monday resulted in significant casualties.

"My team is in constant contact with their counterparts, and we’re working to de-escalate in a way that allows people to return home safely," he remarked.

The joint statement from the leaders also addressed the Gulf state’s role in the conflict in Sudan, with both leaders emphasizing that the war lacks a military resolution, which has led to a massive displacement crisis.

Additionally, they highlighted plans to strengthen cooperation in areas such as space exploration, clean energy, and artificial intelligence, where the UAE has initiated ambitious projects that have garnered interest from the U.S.’s geopolitical competitor, China.

Vice President Kamala Harris held a separate meeting with the UAE president, which was not open to the press. According to the White House, she expressed her serious concerns regarding the conflict in Sudan, noting the millions displaced by the war and the violence inflicted on civilians by the warring parties.
