Body Discovered in Wreckage of Plane Transporting Soccer Player Sala, According to Investigators

LONDON (Reuters) – Air accident investigators announced on Monday that they have located the wreckage of the aircraft carrying Premier League soccer player Emiliano Sala on the seabed near Guernsey, with a body visible inside.

The 28-year-old forward, originally from Argentina, was traveling from Nantes in western France with pilot David Ibbotson to join Welsh team Cardiff City when the plane is believed to have crashed into the sea on January 21.

“The object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft,” stated the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) in a release.

“Tragically, video footage from the remote-operated vehicle (ROV) shows one occupant among the wreckage. The AAIB is now considering the next steps in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, along with law enforcement.”

The wreckage was identified on Sunday after a privately-funded underwater search was initiated following the discovery of two seat cushions along the French coast, which are thought to be from the aircraft.

The AAIB confirmed that the wreckage is indeed from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft, releasing an underwater image of the crash site where part of the registration number – N264DB – is clearly visible.

The agency noted, “The image depicts the rear left side of the fuselage, including part of the aircraft’s registration.” They also indicated that an interim report will be published within a month of the accident.
