Britain Calls for Ceasefire Following Israeli Strikes in Lebanon, According to Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) – On Monday, Britain urged all parties involved to pursue de-escalation and a ceasefire following Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, emphasizing the need for the region to step back from further conflict.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed, "We firmly support Israel’s right to self-defense. However, our clear message now is for all parties to exercise restraint."

Israel has been conducting a series of attacks on Lebanon over the past two weeks, resulting in the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah along with several commanders. These strikes have caused approximately 1,000 Lebanese casualties and led to the displacement of 1 million people. In response, Hezbollah has vowed to resist any Israeli ground invasion into Lebanon.

"We want to see all sides pull back from the brink," the spokesperson stated. "It is essential to avoid any further escalation. A ceasefire would create the necessary conditions for a political solution and lasting peace in the region."

Starmer and other government officials have also advised British nationals to leave Lebanon using commercial flights while it remains feasible.

The spokesperson further noted that the government is preparing for various contingencies concerning the evolving situation in Lebanon. "Our focus right now is on securing additional seats on commercial flights for those wishing to depart, while reiterating our calls for individuals to leave, register their presence with us, and book the first available flights."
