WARSAW (Reuters) – Jan Olszewski, Poland’s former prime minister, passed away in a military hospital in Warsaw late on Thursday, according to reports by state television.

Olszewski, who was 88 years old, was the third prime minister following the fall of communism in 1989, serving for six months from December 1991 to June 1992. Before his political career, he worked as an attorney, representing members of the democratic opposition during the communist era. He was nominated for the role of prime minister by Porozumienie Centrum, the first political party established by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who currently leads the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Additionally, Olszewski served as an advisor to Lech Kaczynski, Jaroslaw’s twin brother, who tragically died in a plane crash in 2010.

Reports indicate that Olszewski had fainted at home several days prior and was subsequently hospitalized, remaining unconscious according to statements from his wife.
