China Claims US Missile Deployment in Philippines Threatens Peace, According to Reuters
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently expressed concerns about the U.S. deployment of intermediate-range missiles in the Philippines, stating that it “undermines regional peace and stability,” according to a report from the foreign ministry.
During a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul in New York, Wang emphasized the importance of avoiding “war or chaos on the Korean Peninsula.” The U.S. has introduced the Typhon system this year, capable of being armed with cruise missiles that could potentially hit targets in China. In response, China has called for the system’s removal, while Russia has condemned the deployment as a provocation that contributes to an arms race in the Indo-Pacific region.
Wang stated that this military deployment is not beneficial for countries in the region.
The Philippines, located south of Taiwan—which China views as its territory—plays a crucial role in U.S. strategy within Asia. It serves as a key location for potential military operations to assist Taiwan in case of aggression from China.
Wang also noted that exchanges and cooperation between China and South Korea have become increasingly active this year.
