White House Announces Sanctions on Iran and Russian Targets, According to Reuters
WASHINGTON – The United States is set to impose sanctions on individuals and entities in Iran and Russia linked to Iran’s provision of ballistic missiles to Moscow, according to the White House.
John Kirby, a spokesperson for national security, announced that new sanctions targeting Iran Air would limit its commercial flights from Iran to destinations in the UK and continental Europe.
Kirby’s remarks followed statements by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who noted that Russia has begun receiving ballistic missiles from Iran, which are expected to be deployed in Ukraine within weeks.
"The arrival of these Iranian missiles, with a range of approximately 75 miles, could enable Russia to target areas beyond the front line while employing Iranian warheads for closer engagements," Kirby explained.
He added that it poses a potential risk for the Middle East, as it would allow Iran to access Russian technology, particularly concerning nuclear matters.
The spokesperson emphasized that these new sanctions are designed to convey that Iran will incur economic repercussions and warned that the U.S. is prepared to impose additional measures if necessary.
