Israeli Military Announces Infantry and Armoured Units Joining Ground Operation in Lebanon, Reports Reuters
JERUSALEM (Reuters) – The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that regular infantry and armored units are now participating in ground operations in southern Lebanon, although these actions will be limited and localized in nature.
On Tuesday, Israel reported that commando and paratroop units had conducted a brief ground operation across the border, marking the first officially acknowledged ground action in Lebanon. The military also revealed that special forces have been conducting ground raids against Hezbollah targets along the border for several months, during which they discovered tunnels and weapon caches hidden beneath residential areas.
The deployment of infantry and armored troops from the 36th Division, which includes the Golani Brigade, the 188th Armoured Brigade, and the 6th Infantry Brigade, indicates a shift from solely limited commando raids to a broader operation.
The military has stated that the primary objective of the ground operation is to eliminate tunnels and other infrastructure along the border. Furthermore, there are no intentions to expand the operations to target Beirut or other major cities in southern Lebanon.
