China States Its Vast Market Represents Opportunity, Not Threat, to the US – Reuters
SHANGHAI (Reuters) – According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, commerce vice minister Wang Shouwen stated that a modern China with a large population presents an opportunity for the United States rather than a threat. This comment was made during ongoing trade discussions in Tianjin.
The talks, which were co-chaired by U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago, are the second meeting this year between the two officials and take place amidst rising trade tensions between the two nations.
Earlier this week, China’s commerce ministry urged the United States to lift all tariffs on Chinese products, anticipating a forthcoming announcement from the Biden administration regarding potential tariff increases on Chinese-made goods, including electric vehicles.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Chinese ministry noted that both sides engaged in "professional, rational and pragmatic" discussions regarding the policies and business issues raised by the business communities of both countries.
The ministry emphasized China’s concerns about U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and expressed opposition to the enforcement of trade and investment restrictions under the rationale of overcapacity.
