China Targets Canada’s Tariffs with Anti-Discriminatory Probe – Reuters

China has initiated an investigation into potential discrimination linked to Canada’s recent trade measures, including increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum, as reported by its commerce ministry on Thursday.

Typically, such investigations take around three months to conclude, though they may be extended in certain circumstances, according to the ministry’s statement.

Additionally, Beijing plans to assess Canadian canola imports following Canada’s decision, in conjunction with the U.S. and the European Union, to implement a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on Chinese aluminum and steel products. Canada exports the majority of its canola to China, the largest importer of oilseeds globally.

China expressed strong disapproval and opposition to Canada’s “discriminatory unilateral restrictive measures” and has sought discussions with Canada at the World Trade Organization regarding these tariffs.

Furthermore, trade tensions have escalated following Canada’s announcement that it is “absolutely” considering a ban on Chinese-made software used in electric vehicles. This move is part of broader efforts to address what Canada describes as overcapacity issues and security concerns.
