Republican Representative Joe Wilson Collapses at Event, Rushed to Hospital
Republican representative Joe Wilson, a prominent member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, collapsed during an event on Tuesday and was taken to the hospital, according to his office.
The official social media profile for the 77-year-old congressman announced that he "was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, DC."
Wilson’s son, Alan Wilson, who serves as the attorney general of South Carolina, posted that "doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms." He added, "I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals."
Wilson fell unwell while seated in the front row during a celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day at Ukraine House. The event took a serious turn when the Ukrainian ambassador paused her speech to request a doctor.
Having represented a conservative district in South Carolina since 2001, Wilson gained national attention in 2009 for yelling "you lie!" at President Barack Obama during a joint congressional session.
