El Salvador President Set to Visit Argentina This Month, According to Reuters
BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador is set to visit Buenos Aires in late September to meet with Argentine President Javier Milei, according to an Argentine government source.
This meeting will follow their previous encounter in June when Bukele inaugurated his second term in office. However, the source did not provide additional details regarding the upcoming visit.
Bukele, 42, is a former advertising executive who gained significant popularity for his crackdown on gangs, which led to a notable decrease in murder rates in El Salvador. Despite this, critics have raised concerns about troubling regressions in human rights during his administration.
Milei, a libertarian economist and relatively new to politics, took office in December. He has implemented strict austerity measures aimed at addressing Argentina’s severe economic crisis, where more than half the population lives in poverty. Additionally, he has supported legislation to enhance the military’s role in domestic security operations.
