AMC, Regal, and Other US Chains Plan $2.2 Billion in Theater Upgrades

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Major theater chains, including AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, and Cinemark, are set to invest over $2.2 billion in upgrades for theaters across the U.S. and Canada over the next three years, as announced by an industry group.

The enhancements will be implemented by the eight largest theater chains, which account for more than 21,000 screens and approximately 67% of box office revenue, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners.

The movie industry has encountered various challenges in recent years, including the rise of streaming services, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and strikes in Hollywood during 2023.

The funds allocated will be utilized for a range of improvements, such as installing more comfortable seating, incorporating advanced sound and laser projection technologies, and upgrading air conditioning, carpeting, as well as food and beverage offerings.
