JetBlue to Purchase Sustainable Jet Fuel for New York Airport, Reports Reuters
JetBlue Airways announced on Wednesday that it will source sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from a subsidiary of a major U.S. refiner, which will be distributed by an energy firm for use in flights departing from New York’s airport.
According to the agreement, fuel will be supplied to John F. Kennedy International Airport starting in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Airlines are facing increasing pressure from environmental groups to reduce their carbon emissions, especially as the current administration aims to enhance SAF production and facilitate a transition away from traditional jet fuels in the aviation sector.
As part of the 12-month initial agreement, JetBlue is expected to receive approximately 3.3 million gallons of blended fuel and has the option to acquire an additional 13.3 million gallons.
The sustainable aviation fuel, which will be produced from a variety of feedstocks such as agricultural waste and used cooking oils, will be blended with conventional jet fuel. This blended SAF has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 80% compared to traditional jet fuel.
