ATHENS – A former employee, reportedly disgruntled, tragically shot and killed the head of a Greek shipping company along with two others before taking his own life at the company’s office in Athens on Monday, according to a police spokeswoman.
Emergency services, including police, fire engines, and ambulances, were positioned outside the headquarters of European Navigation in a southern suburb of the capital. Earlier, specialized anti-terrorism units had entered the building, as reported by eyewitnesses.
Among the deceased was the owner of European Navigation, although the police spokesperson, Konstantina Dimoglidou, did not disclose the victim’s name.
One employee, who spoke to a local news outlet but chose to remain anonymous, recounted the incident: “We were at our desks working when we heard the shots.” She mentioned that the assailant instructed employees to leave the premises.
The gunman, identified as a 76-year-old former employee, was later found dead in a different section of the building, along with the three victims—a man and two women. Dimoglidou indicated that the shooter was discovered with the weapon he used, suggesting that he had likely taken his own life after the attack.
Shootings not linked to gang activity are relatively uncommon in Greece, which enforces strict regulations on gun ownership. The police have cordoned off the area and are actively investigating the incident.
