GM to Lay Off Approximately 1,700 Workers at Kansas Plant, Reports Reuters

General Motors has announced plans to lay off 1,695 workers at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, as detailed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification earlier this week.

A spokesperson for GM confirmed the layoffs, which were first reported by Automotive News. The initial round of layoffs will commence on November 18, affecting 686 full-time employees temporarily while terminating 250 temporary workers.

The second round is scheduled to start on January 12 of the following year, resulting in the temporary layoff of 759 full-time workers.

In May, GM revealed plans to halt production of the Cadillac XT4 after January 2025 at the Kansas facility, leading to layoffs of production staff until operations resume in late 2025 for both the Bolt EV and XT4 on the same assembly line.

The spokesperson stated, “As previously announced in May, GM is investing approximately $390 million in our Fairfax Assembly Plant to add production of the new Chevrolet Bolt EV.”

To accommodate the installation of new equipment, employees will be placed on temporary layoff until production restarts in mid-2025. Additionally, in August, the company laid off more than 1,000 salaried employees globally across its software and service divisions.
