Fentanyl Discussions Planned Between U.S. and China at APEC Summit
NEW YORK (Reuters) – The United States aims to engage in discussions with China regarding efforts to curb the spread of fentanyl during the upcoming APEC summit in November, according to a senior U.S. official on Tuesday.
This announcement follows U.S. President Joe Biden’s revelation at an event in New York that recent data indicates a 10% reduction in U.S. deaths attributed to fentanyl compared to the previous year.
Last November, Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the fentanyl issue during a summit in California. The U.S. continues to urge China to take more decisive actions to prevent the production of chemicals that can lead to fentanyl, which is a significant contributor to drug overdoses in the United States.
When questioned about the likelihood of a discussion on fentanyl at the APEC summit in Peru, the official expressed optimism, stating, "I would be very optimistic that we will have this on the agenda," and noted that both countries have already experienced some positive outcomes from previous talks.
