Greece Reports Woman Dies After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Kos Island, According to Reuters
Greece’s coastguard has reported the recovery of a woman’s body and the rescue of 15 migrants following the capsizing of their boat near the island of Kos in the eastern Aegean Sea on Friday.
In a separate event on the same day, the coastguard saved 78 migrants from a wooden vessel that was about 23 nautical miles from the small island of Gavdos in southern Greece. The rescued migrants are being transported to the nearby island of Crete, as stated by a coastguard official who requested to remain anonymous.
Details surrounding the incident involving the capsized boat are still unclear.
Greece has historically served as a primary entry point into the European Union for migrants and refugees from regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, particularly during the peak influx in 2015-2016. During that period, nearly 1 million individuals arrived on its islands, primarily using inflatable dinghies. Following a significant decrease in migrant flows, numbers began to rise again last year.
