Zelenskiy Arrives in New York for UN Meetings, Reports Ukrinform via Reuters
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy in New York for U.N. General Assembly
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has arrived in New York to attend the U.N. General Assembly, as reported by Ukrinform. His visit aligns with U.S. efforts to finalize a substantial military aid package for Ukraine, amounting to $375 million, which marks a shift from the smaller packages that have been provided in recent months.
During his trip, Zelenskiy will outline a "victory plan" regarding Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia in meetings with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris scheduled for Thursday. He is also seeking a meeting with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has been critical of U.S. aid to Ukraine, referring to it as a financial burden without asserting a clear desire for Ukraine’s victory. Trump has indicated a willingness to meet with Zelenskiy this week, although a specific date has yet to be confirmed.
As the election approaches, Trump is set to face Harris on November 5. Zelenskiy has consistently raised concerns about shortages of necessary military supplies, particularly 155-millimeter artillery shells produced at a facility in Scranton. These concerns have become increasingly urgent as Russian forces continue to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
Two U.S. officials revealed that the forthcoming aid package, likely to be announced soon, will comprise patrol boats, additional munitions for high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), 155- and 105-millimeter artillery ammunition, spare parts, and other weaponry. The exact details and scope of the package may still be adjusted in the days leading up to Biden’s anticipated endorsement.
