Harris to Advocate for Stricter Asylum and Border Control Measures, Campaign States
TUCSON, Arizona – U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to advocate for stricter asylum and border control measures during a speech in Arizona on Friday, according to a campaign official.
Following an asylum ban implemented by President Joe Biden in June, migrants apprehended for illegal crossings can be swiftly deported or sent back to Mexico if the average daily border arrests exceed 2,500 over the course of a week.
Harris is anticipated to propose modifications to this policy, suggesting that the ban should be enacted when a smaller number of individuals cross illegally.
Moreover, she aims to complicate the process of lifting the emergency authority, proposing that the average number of border crossings must decrease even further—below the current threshold of 1,500—before restrictions can be relaxed.
Harris will outline these proposed changes in her speech in the border town of Douglas, Arizona.
