Kyiv Reports Russian Attacks on Medical Center in Ukraine’s Sumy Resulting in 8 Deaths and 11 Injuries, According to Reuters

KYIV (Reuters) – Russian forces targeted a medical center in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, on Saturday morning, launching a second strike while the building was being evacuated, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, according to Ukrainian officials.

Prosecutors reported that at the time of the attacks, the facility was housing 86 patients and 38 staff members. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko noted on Telegram that the initial strike killed one person and caused damage to several floors of the hospital. As evacuation efforts were underway, a subsequent attack resulted in five additional fatalities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy later confirmed the total death toll as eight, with 11 others injured. He urged global leaders to pay attention to where Russia is directing its attacks, emphasizing that they are targeting hospitals and civilian lives. “Only force can compel Russia to peace. Peace through force is the only correct approach,” he stated.

While Klymenko did not specify the types of weapons used in the assaults, regional authorities and air force representatives indicated that drones were deployed in the attack. The frequency of assaults on Sumy and its surrounding area has increased significantly since Ukrainian forces initiated operations in Russia’s Kursk region in August, capturing numerous settlements.

Sumy city is situated merely 32 km from the Russian border, and Russian forces have been conducting drone and guided bomb attacks on both the city and the region.

Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian air forces reported that they had intercepted 69 out of 73 drones during a Russian overnight assault, which also involved two ballistic and two cruise missiles. Approximately 15 Russian attack drones were reportedly destroyed by air defenses in Kyiv and its outskirts, as confirmed by the military administration.
