Factbox: Over 1.6 Million US Customers Still Without Power Due to Hurricane Helene By Reuters

Over 1.6 million homes and businesses in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and other Southeastern and Midwestern states were still without power on Monday after Hurricane Helene hit the Florida Panhandle as a major storm on September 26, according to data from PowerOutage.us.

This number is down from approximately 2.1 million earlier in the day as utility companies worked to restore power. Overall, the storm disrupted service to around 5.5 million customers.

The winds, rain, and storm surge from Helene resulted in over 100 fatalities, based on a tally from state and local officials.

Duke Energy reported the highest number of outages in the Carolinas, with about 415,601 customers still without power in South Carolina and 287,369 in North Carolina. The company stated on Sunday that it had restored power to more than 1.1 million customers in the region and anticipated that most customers would have their service back by Friday.

However, Duke’s storm director for the Carolinas, Jason Hollifield, pointed out that many areas in the South Carolina Upstate and North Carolina mountains would require extensive rebuilding of the electrical system rather than simple repairs.

Here are the major outages by state:

– South Carolina: 694,518
– Georgia: 505,726
– North Carolina: 404,303
– Florida: 82,874
– Virginia: 85,278
– Ohio: 15,921
– West Virginia: 17,153

Total outages amount to 1,678,563.
