MetaMask ‘Glitch’ Resulted in Excessive opBNB Recommended Fees: Report from Cointelegraph

A “glitch” in MetaMask that caused it to overestimate opBNB gas fees has now been resolved, as reported by BNB Chain on social media. Many users tend to pay the default recommended fee displayed in their wallets, so an inaccurate estimation could lead to overpayment.

opBNB is an optimistic rollup layer-2 solution that was launched on September 13 and developed by the team behind BNB Chain. Recently, the team discovered that MetaMask had set a default minimum recommendation for gas fees based on averages from all networks. While this approach works for other layer-2 networks, it did not align well with opBNB. According to the team, opBNB fees can be significantly lower than those of other layer-1 and layer-2 networks, resulting in incorrect estimations.
